With the wedding season in full flow and the autumn wedding fairs upon us, Catherines of Partick, one of Scotland’s largest suppliers of wedding and special occasion wear, gives a valuable insight into the etiquette of hats and fascinators. Whether you are the mother of the bride or groom, or even a distinguished guest, Catherines of Partick has the expertise to ensure you choose the perfect headwear to complement your wedding outfit.

Perfect Mother of the Bride or Groom Dress

Candice Nicol, director of Catherines of Partick, said: “A wedding is a once in a lifetime occasion and is a major day for a mother as they see their son or daughter walking down the aisle. As a result, we’ve seen a growing trend of people who want to invest a great deal of time and energy in finding a one-off look that not only gives them confidence, but makes them feel comfortable on the day”. Catherines is renowned for dressing mothers of the bride and groom as well as other key members of the wedding party and boasts a massive range of designer occasion wear and evening dresses to suit every budget. Irene Stewart, one of the store’s most experienced assistants, has given her top tips for ensuring you choose the right headwear to suit your outfit.

Hats & Fascinators

  1. Take the outfit you’re going to be wearing with you when shopping for your hat – a hat or fascinator should be worn to complete an outfit, not the other way round.
  2. Consider the style of your outfit when deciding on a hat or a fascinator. Hats generally look good with all styles, whether it be a dress or a skirt and jacket, whereas fascinators look better if they’re worn with a strappy dress.
  3. Many people think they don’t suit hats, but it’s just because they don’t wear them on a regular basis. Hats actually suit most people and contrary to popular belief, it’s fascinators that can be quite tricky because they don’t suit all lengths and styles of hair.
  4. Don’t hold the hat against the fabric of your outfit to determine if it matches as the fabrics are so different they will never match. The best way to tell is by wearing the whole outfit which will allow you to see the overall look.
  5. Try on lots of different styles – some will suit you, and your outfit, better than others.
  6. If you want to go for something more flamboyant makes sure you have the confidence to wear it, but also keep in mind the occasion you’re dressing for – you don’t want to up-stage the bride.
  7. Always take your hat or fascinator to your hairdresser for advice on how you should style your hair and how best to position the headpiece.
